Langford Field Sketches Award 2013

Quest'anno durante la mostra annuale della Society of Willdife Artists ho vinto il "Langford Field Sketches Award 2013" premio che viene assegnato ai migliori schizzi e taccuini di campo. La fortuna ha voluto che vincessi questo premio durante il 50° anniversario della Society quindi in concomitanza di un evento particolare che ha richiamato centinaia di persone anche per la presenza di Sir David Attenborough come ospite straordinario. Ed ho avuto quindi l'onore di esser premiato dallo stesso David Attenborough.(Il video qui)

About the Award: The Award is given to any artist of any age who shows a fundamental understanding of the subject through their work in the field. The subject has to be of wildlife but this could encompass back garden nature just as much as exotic expedition work. The judges are looking for a body of work that captures the essence of the subject which has been drawn from life. We are not looking for studio work.

Basilicata - A digital diary

Basilicata 15 - 21 settembre 2013: una palestra di grigi, ocra, tonalità neutre, e intensi punti di luce. Con velature di Giallo di Napoli. Colori caldi, naturali e tenui con contrasti che cambiano totalmente nelle diverse ore del giorno e che riflettono la variabilità del cielo autunnale. Matera si presenta così. Ti attrae subito in modo incondizionato. Non è facile rendere su carta la sovrapposizione di case, angoli, finestre, tetti e scale immerse nei “Sassi” e non è facile scegliere un angolo da dipingere e scartarne un altro … “effetto Venezia” lo chiamo io! Tutto intorno alla città le case diventano roccia, terra e paesaggio naturale fino a trasformarsi nella Gravina, il suggestivo canyon sottostante. Un gradiente naturale che si rispecchia in tutta la regione. Craco affonda letteralmente tra le rocce, i paesi incastonati nelle splendide Dolomiti Lucane sembrano sorti insieme alle montagne e i calanchi sono i fragili pilastri che sorreggono Aliano. E all’improvviso quando i colori si fanno brillanti e i miei pennelli si sporcano di cobalto, turchese e Blu Oltremare e cercano una tonalità mista che possa riprodurre il nero vellutato degli scogli e delle spiagge non ho più dubbi: Maratea e la splendida costa sono apparse dopo chilometri di curve e tornanti tra le montagne che le proteggono.

Da tempo giro con i miei taccuini, matite e acquerelli per fermare su carta quello che vedo. È il mio strumento per osservare, ricordare, viaggiare lentamente e raccontare. La Basilicata è bellissima, lo sapevo e non mi faccio cogliere impreparato.

A wide variety of greys, ochres and neutral shades dotted with the brightest rays of light. Soft yellows and warm earth tones, with strong contrasts that change completely depending on the time of day reflecting the variable autumn sky. This is Matera. You find yourself instantly attracted to this place in an unconditional manner. It’s not easy to put it down on paper, the overlapping houses, corners, windows, roofs and stairways tucked deep into the “Sassi” and it is certainly not easy to choose the spot you want to paint because this means discarding another spot just as beautiful … I call it ‘the Venice effect’!

All around the town the houses gradually turn into rock, ground and blend into the surrounding panorama, until becoming one with the Gravina, the amazing canyon below. A recurring natural element that I found almost everywhere we went in Basilicata. The ghost town of Craco literally sinks down into the surrounding rocks, Castelmezzano e Pietrapertosa seems set among the splendid Lucanian Dolomites, others towns seem like they have grown together with the mountains around them, the calanchi seemingly fragile pillars bearing the town of Aliano.

Then suddenly, colours become bright and my paintbrushes become tainted with cobalt, turquoise, deep sea blue in until becoming the velvety black like the rocks and unique beaches of Maratea.

For a while now I have been traveling with my sketchpads, my pencils and watercolours so that I can record what I see on paper. It is my way of observing, remembering, slowly traveling and telling a unique story. The Basilicata region is really beautiful, I knew that a while ago and I came prepared…

Aeroporto "A.Brunetta" di Orbetello

La porta di accesso alla Rocca di Orbetello dall'interno dell'ex Aeroporto intitolato alla memoria del Guardiamarina Agostino Brunetta aviatore della Prima Guerra Mondiale. Il posto ha un grande fascino ma è in una situazione di totale abbandono e degrado. Matita e acquerello su taccuino Daler-Rowney 30x21 cm.

The Natural Eye - Society of Wildlife Artists, 50th Anniversary Exhibition

Quest'anno la Society of Wildlife Artists festeggerà il 50° anniversario durante la mostra annuale in programma alla Mall Galleries di Londra dal 30 Ottobre al 10 Novembre 2013. Ospite d'eccezione per l'inaugurazione sarà David Attenborough. Io sarò presente con 8 quadri tra cui questo acquerello di un picchio rosso maggiore 18x38 cm.

The Society of Wildlife Artists celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion Sir David Attenborough will be opening their annual exhibition The Natural Eye held at London’s prestigious Mall Galleries. The exhibition will be the London launch of the Society’s new book “The Natural Eye, Art Book One” which showcases the talents of the members of the Society and has been published to help raise funds for the Society’s exciting bursary scheme. The SWLA Bursary scheme is in its 25th year and has awarded well over 70 bursaries to young and emerging artists to help them on their creative journeys. Chosen as ‘Book of the Month’ by BBC Wildlife Magazine this limited edition publication will be available from the exhibition and via www.swla.co.uk

The exhibition has over 330 works by members and non-members on show. Four of the founding members are still regular exhibitors and past President Robert Gillmor, who was integral in setting up the Society, has his ‘Bull o’the Bog’ featuring on the cover of the catalogue. John Busby was also there from the start and has work in this 50th anniversary show that is a showcase for art inspired by the natural world. The ‘Out of the Frame’ room that shows fieldwork from selected projects by member artists will show 3 artists this year. There will be the stunning work of artist Carl Ellis documenting the fish of his local rivers, Matt Underwood who has spent time in the Alpes-Maritime in France and shows his sketches from the region and Mike Warren who will be exhibiting pieces from his long running project on his local quarry site reserve.

Matite in Viaggio - Terza Edizione

Terza edizione della rassegna "Matite in Viaggio" in programma a Mestre dall'11 al 20 Ottobre 2013 presso il Centro Culturale Candiani. Quest'anno per la copertina è stato scelto un mio disegno dedicato a Capri e ai piccoli migratori che in primavera e autunno transitano sull'isola.

30 Aprile 2013 - Qualche mese fa ho trascorso una giornata a Villa Ada, grande e storica villa di Roma, realizzando alcuni bozzetti della pineta per degli acquerelli su commissione. Taccuino Daler-Rowney.

Aironi rossi e risaie

12 maggio 2013: Risaie nel Parco fluviale del Po e dell’Orba. Ho accompagnato Il pittore naturalistico Lorenzo Dotti impegnato in un workshop di disegno presso la Palude di San Genuario splendida oasi tra le risaie del Vercellese gestita da Skua Nature.

Per la prima volta frequento questi ambienti straordinariamente ricchi di avifauna con tutte le specie di aironi presenti, per lo più nidificanti. E la mia attenzione è catturata dagli splendidi aironi rossi qui davvero facili da osservare. Matita e acquerelli su taccuino Daler Rowney formato album 26,5x21 cm.

A Torino con Denis Clavreul e Lorenzo Dotti

11 maggio: A Torino per incontrare Lorenzo Dotti e il pittore francese Denis Clavreul impegnato in un progetto relativo alle Green City europee. Giornata quindi trascorsa a disegnare insieme lungo le sponde del Po alla confluenza con lo Stura di fronte alla garzaia di aironi cenerini dell’isolone di Bertolla. In Italia questa garzaia, una colonia di nidificazione, è l’unica presente all’interno di una città. Nel fiume decine di svassi maggiori, due sterne comuni e qualche nibbio bruno in volo. Nel terzo disegno l’onore di esser ritratto da Denis, mentre disegno insieme a Lorenzo.

Seychelles

Dal 1 al 13 giugno 2013 insieme ad Alessandro Troisi (editore, grafico e pittore) e Iole Eulalia Rosa (pittrice e illustratrice) ho girato e disegnato tra le isole dell'arcipelago alla ricerca dei paesaggi e degli animali, per lo più endemici, che caratterizzano questo ecosistema unico al mondo. Il viaggio rientra in un progetto presentato da Alessandro Troisi con Ars et Natura e promosso dell’Ente del Turismo delle Seychelles di Roma per la valorizzazione del patrimonio naturalistico delle Isole attraverso il lavoro di artisti naturalistici.

Le isole visitate sono state: Silhouette, Cerf Island, Cousin, Praslin, La Digue, Moyenne e Mahé. A Cousin Island ho avuto la fortuna di dormire sull’isola grazie all’ospitalità dello staff ed è stata una grande opportunità per disegnare sterne stolide maggiori e minori, fetonti e sterne bianche. Sull’isola di Praslin invece il nostro obiettivo è stato la foresta della Vallee de Mai unico posto al mondo dove crescono le rare palme Coco de Mer.

Nelle immagini alcuni schizzi e disegni. Anse Cocos a La Digue, e alcune specie di Cousin Island: una delle testuggini giganti di Aldabra ultracentenarie, le sterne stolide minori, Lesser Noddy  (Anous tenuirostris) e i fetonti, White-tailed Tropic Bird (Phaethon lepturus).

Ritorno dalle Seychelles

Una delle ultime notti passate a Mahé e un primo bilancio del viaggio alle Seychelles. Invece di un unico taccuino questa volta ho preferito utilizzare fogli singoli di diverso tipo e formato scegliendo di volta in volta la carta a  seconda del soggetto da raffigurare.

Saline di Tarquinia

Marzo 2013 - Gita alle Saline di Tarquinia approfittando dell'apertura per il corso base di birdwatching organizzato dal Parco di Bracciano Martignano. Tra le tante specie osservate un piccolo gruppo di quattro albastrelli (Tringa stagnatilis) e una bellissima sterna maggiore (Sterna caspia). Matita e acquerello su taccuino Daler-Rowney.

Lo Stagnone di Capraia

Ancora un acquerello di Capraia. Uno scorcio dello Stagnone o Laghetto unico stagno naturale dell'Arcipelago Toscano. In acqua ci sono fioriture di ranuncolo d'acqua e tra i fiori è possibile scorgere qualche raganella sarda. Acquerello su taccuino di carta Arches rilegato a mano.

I lucherini di Oriolo Romano

Marzo 2013 - Ospite di Betta e Guido della Casa nel Bosco per disegnare i lucherini (Carduelis spinus) che quest'anno in particolare hanno preso d'assalto le mangiatoie sistemate in giardino. Sono confidenti e non si preoccupano affatto che in giardino ci siano decine di persone. Sono invece molto aggressivi verso le altre specie cince, fringuelli che si devono accontentare di fugaci passaggi. Solo i verdoni grandi quasi il doppio oppongono qualche resistenza. La Salamandre - Miniguides

In allegato con l'ultimo numero della rivista svizzera "La Salamandre" è uscita la Miniguida "Faune de haute montagne" con i testi di Alessandro Staehli e con le mie illustrazioni che raffigurano specie e comportamenti di circa 20 tra mammiferi, uccelli, rettili, anfibi e invertebrati che si possono incontrare in alta montagna.

Mammals of Africa al Museo

27 marzo 2013 - Lo scheletro di elefante nella sala del Museo civico di Zoologia di Roma disegnato durante la presentazione dei volumi "Mammals of Africa" ultima fatica del grande artista e scienziato Jonathan Kingdon. Matita su taccuino Daler-Rowney.
