Nato a Roma nel 1970 si è laureato in Scienze Biologiche con una tesi sperimentale sull’ecologia della lepre presso il Dipartimento di Biologia Animale e dell’Uomo dell’Università "La Sapienza" di Roma (Relatore Prof. L. Boitani).
Ha realizzato disegni per libri, riviste, calendari, schede didattiche, pannelli esplicativi e per numerose pubblicazioni a carattere naturalistico con vari enti e associazioni nazionali ed internazionali coinvolte nella conservazione della natura tra cui: WWF, IUCN, FAO, ARP (Agenzia Regionale Parchi del Lazio), RomaNatura (Ente Regionale che gestisce le aree naturali protette nel Comune di Roma), ISPRA, Museo Civico di Zoologia di Roma, Fondazione Bioparco di Roma, Università di Roma La Sapienza, Comune di Roma, Regione Lazio, Provincia di Ascoli Piceno e vari parchi e riserve naturali. Ha al suo attivo collaborazioni con BBC Wildlife Magazine, Traveller Condé Nast, La Salamandre e Focus. Alcuni articoli sul suo lavoro sono stati pubblicati su riviste internazionali legate alla tecnica dell’acquerello (The Art of Watercolour, Pratiques des Art).
Ha realizzato le tavole per una guida al riconoscimento dei Mammiferi della Cina (A Guide to the Mammals of China) edito dalla Princeton University Press.
Ha esposto in varie mostre personali e collettive in Italia, Inghilterra e Finlandia e invitato a partecipare a progetti editoriali e di promozione di aree naturalistiche in Italia, Finlandia, Inghilterra, Danimarca, Slovenia e Seychelles.
2009 - Primo premio nella categoria World Birds del concorso BBC WildlifeArtist of the Year.
2009 - Selezionato per la X edizione della Biennale du Carnet de Voyage a Clermont-Ferrand in Francia.
2012 - Premio "Birdwatch Artist of the year 2012" in collaborazione con Swarovski Optics.
2013 - Premio "Langford Field Sketches Award".

Federico Gemma
Born in Rome in 1970 Federico Gemma is a
biologist, illustrator and wildlife artist. He’s Member of the Society of
Wildlife Artist (SWLA) and since 2001 he exhibits his artwork in London at the
annual exhibition of the SWLA.
He worked for parks and nature reserves,
museums and nature conservation bodies making drawings and illustrations for
calendars, panels, thematic areas, books, brochures and magazines.
He has collaborated with many magazines as BBC
Wildlife Magazine, Traveler Condé Nast, La Salamandre and Focus. Some articles
on his work have been published in international magazines related to the
watercolour technique (The Art of Watercolor, Pratiques des Art).
Among the awards in the last years he won the “Birdwatch Artist of the Year” and the
“RSPB Fine Art Award” two of the most prestigious awards of the British
Wildlife Art.
In the last two years he also has participated
in “Birds in Art”, the prestigious exhibition of the Woodson Art Museum in
Wisconsin and one of his works has become part of the museum's permanent
collection. For the Royal Mail he has realized a set of 10 songbirds Special
Stamps.
For the EDT publisher he has realized some
sketchbooks dedicated to the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. He illustrated the
plates for “A Guide to the Mammals of China” published by Princeton University
Press.
It has been selected in various editions of the
most important festivals dedicated to travel sketchbooks: Rendez-vous du Carnet
de Voyage in Clermont Ferrand, “Matite in Viaggio” in Mestre and “Autori Diari
di Viaggio” in Ferrara.
He has exhibited in various solo and group
exhibitions in Italy, England and Finland and has been invited to participate
in editorial and promotional projects for naturalistic areas in Italy, Finland,
England, Denmark, Slovenia and the Seychelles.
He likes very much spending his free time
travelling Italy, Europe and the world looking for subjects, expecially birds,
mammals and landscape, to portray. He mostly uses watercolour, a technique
which he loves for the brightness and transparency of the colour. Its capacity
for rapid execution makes it also ideal to the use on the field.
