Qualche foto della 51° Edizione della mostra annuale della Society of Wildlife Artists. Quest'anno ho vinto il premio della RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) con un acquerello che raffigura uno stiaccino osservato sull'Isola del Giglio. Ma la notizia ancora più bella è stato il mio coinvolgimento per il prossimo anno nel progetto congiunto sulla migrazione tra BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) e la SWLA. Quest'anno quattro artisti della Society (Bruce Pearson, Esther Tyson, Greg Poole e Bob Greenhalf) sono stati in Senegal per raccontare, attraverso schizzi e disegni sul campo, le zone di svernamento dei cuculi seguiti tramite trasmettitori satellitari. Il prossimo anno altri artisti seguiranno i cuculi nel Regno Unito e io li seguirò nel loro passaggio in Italia. Tutti i lavori realizzati verranno esposti nella prossima edizione della mostra nella sala "Out of the Frame" dedicata al progetto.

Original Artwork Draw - Rutland Bird Fair

 

I due acquerelli realizzati per l' "Original Artwork Draw" che la Society of Wildlife Artists anche quest'anno ha organizzato per raccogliere fondi a favore di borse di studio durante il Rutland Bird Fair. Gabbiano Corso (Ichthyaetus audouinii) e Muflone (Ovis orientalis musimon) cm 15x22 ciascuno.

The Natural Eye - Art Book One

Quest'anno per il 50th anniversario della Society of Wildlife Artists è stato pubblicato un libro con il contributo di circa 60 membri della Society che hanno realizzato appositamente dei lavori formato cartolina. Nelle immagini il mio contributo con due acquerelli rispettivamente di fenicotteri in planata e di un fanello. Il libro dal titolo "The Natural Eye - Art Book One" è disponibile sul sito swla.co.uk. Tutti i proventi delle vendite saranno utilizzati per borse di studio e altre iniziative rivolte ad artisti ispirati dal mondo naturale.

The Natural Eye, Art Book One is out now. With almost 60 of our artists represented it is packed with images, each one accompanied by a short piece of text by the artist giving an insight into their experience in making the work. Chris Packham has written the foreword and there is text by Robert Gillmor, Harriet Mead and Bruce Pearson on the history and work of the Society. Langford Field Sketches Award 2013

Quest'anno durante la mostra annuale della Society of Willdife Artists ho vinto il "Langford Field Sketches Award 2013" premio che viene assegnato ai migliori schizzi e taccuini di campo. La fortuna ha voluto che vincessi questo premio durante il 50° anniversario della Society quindi in concomitanza di un evento particolare che ha richiamato centinaia di persone anche per la presenza di Sir David Attenborough come ospite straordinario. Ed ho avuto quindi l'onore di esser premiato dallo stesso David Attenborough.(Il video qui)

About the Award: The Award is given to any artist of any age who shows a fundamental understanding of the subject through their work in the field. The subject has to be of wildlife but this could encompass back garden nature just as much as exotic expedition work. The judges are looking for a body of work that captures the essence of the subject which has been drawn from life. We are not looking for studio work.

The Natural Eye - Society of Wildlife Artists, 50th Anniversary Exhibition

Quest'anno la Society of Wildlife Artists festeggerà il 50° anniversario durante la mostra annuale in programma alla Mall Galleries di Londra dal 30 Ottobre al 10 Novembre 2013. Ospite d'eccezione per l'inaugurazione sarà David Attenborough. Io sarò presente con 8 quadri tra cui questo acquerello di un picchio rosso maggiore 18x38 cm.

The Society of Wildlife Artists celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion Sir David Attenborough will be opening their annual exhibition The Natural Eye held at London’s prestigious Mall Galleries. The exhibition will be the London launch of the Society’s new book “The Natural Eye, Art Book One” which showcases the talents of the members of the Society and has been published to help raise funds for the Society’s exciting bursary scheme. The SWLA Bursary scheme is in its 25th year and has awarded well over 70 bursaries to young and emerging artists to help them on their creative journeys. Chosen as ‘Book of the Month’ by BBC Wildlife Magazine this limited edition publication will be available from the exhibition and via www.swla.co.uk

The exhibition has over 330 works by members and non-members on show. Four of the founding members are still regular exhibitors and past President Robert Gillmor, who was integral in setting up the Society, has his ‘Bull o’the Bog’ featuring on the cover of the catalogue. John Busby was also there from the start and has work in this 50th anniversary show that is a showcase for art inspired by the natural world. The ‘Out of the Frame’ room that shows fieldwork from selected projects by member artists will show 3 artists this year. There will be the stunning work of artist Carl Ellis documenting the fish of his local rivers, Matt Underwood who has spent time in the Alpes-Maritime in France and shows his sketches from the region and Mike Warren who will be exhibiting pieces from his long running project on his local quarry site reserve.

Birdwatch/Swarovski Artist of the year 2012!

Di ritorno dalla mostra "The Natural Eye" alla Mall Galleries di Londra con una bellissima sorpresa: il mio quadro "Black Grouse display" ha vinto il prestigioso Premio "Birdwatch Artist of the year 2012" in collaborazione con Swarovski Optic, forse il più importante riconoscimento nella Birding Art in Inghilterra.
E, a conclusione di quella che si è rivelata una giornata straordinaria, sono stato anche eletto Full Member della Society of Wildlife Artist! 

"For its 17th year, Birdwatch's annual art award was held in London this month, with the first prize going to an outstandingly talented Italian bird painter.

Birdwatch was proud to host its Birdwatch Artist of the Year award at the Mall Galleries in London's Borough of Westminster, in association with Swarovski Optik. The presentation of the award went hand-in-hand with the launch of the 49th Society for Wildlife Artists' (SWLA) The Natural Eye exhibition, displaying a breathtaking array of artistic endeavour from all over Britain and around the world.

The outright winner was Italian bird painter Federico Gemma, whose atmospheric Black Grouse display, Finland stood out for its combination of observational accuracy, frozen action and artistic flair in its use of light and space. He won optical equipment from Swarovski Optik.

By the time BBC wildlife television presenter Mike Dilger made his opening speech, a capacity crowd had already heard wildlife sculptor and SWLA president Harriet Mead sum up the excellence of this year's entries. An audience of leading lights from the worlds of birding, conservation and wildlife art discussed the sheer breadth of paintings, drawings, linocuts, sculptures and collages on show, the majority representing birds.

Federico described his methods to Birdwatch, and further coverage of the awards and other prizewinners can be seen in the December issue, on sale from the usual outlets on Thursday 22 November."

Postcards show - Bird Fair 2012

 

Anche quest'anno la  Society of Wildlife Artists sarà presente al British Birdwatching Fair di Rutland (17-19 Agosto 2012) presentando il "Postcard Show" iniziativa per raccogliere fondi a favore di borse di studio. Questi due acquerelli sono il mio contributo. Una cinciarella e un camoscio d'Abruzzo. Acquerelli su carta Arches 23x18 cm.

Tre immagini della mostra della SWLA. Quest'anno per la prima volta ho partecipato alla riunione della associazione e stare insieme ad artisti come Bruce Pearson, Harriet Mead, Andrew Stock, Mike Warren, John Threlfall, Chris Rose, Robert Gillmor, Robert Geenhalf, Peter Partington tra gli altri presenti è sempre una bella sensazione (da qui a  capire tutto quello che si son detti bè questo è un altro paio di maniche!). La sala più piccola della galleria è stata dedicata all'esposizione di lavori realizzati sul campo da alcuni membri e devo dire che alcuni erano davvero impressionanti. Chris Rose si conferma un talento purissimo mentre Bruce Pearson, che ha trascorso 35 giorni su un peschereccio nelle acque sudafricane, ha realizzato un reportage straordinario di grande impatto.

Quest'anno per la prima volta da membro associato ho partecipato alla mostra della SWLA con 6 opere. Ancora una volta l'esposizione di quasi 400 quadri si rivela una vetrina importante e di grande ispirazione per chi ama l'arte naturalistica anche se moltissime opere credo possano essere apprezzate anche da i non appassionati. Alle pareti e nella sala opere di Darren Rees, Bruce Pearson, Harriet Mead, John Threlfall, Mike Warren, Tim Wootton, Carl Ellis e tantissimi altri. Dopo due anni sono tornato a vendere un quadro e la situazione generale delle vendite mi è sembrata migliore con i bollini rossi che cominciano a tornare. (Alla fine i quadri venduti sono stati 4!).

Al ritorno la scoperta che per la "simpatica" Ryanair è vietato portare i tubetti di acquerello nel bagaglio a mano ...

Quest'anno come membro associato della Society of Wildlife Artists ho presentato 6 quadri e sono stati accettati tutti. Dal 21 settembre saranno esposti a Londra nella mostra annuale della SWLA dal titolo "The Natural Eye" che si terrà presso la Mall Galleries fino al 2 ottobre. Nell'immagine uno dei lavori che sarà esposto, una capinera tra i rovi, acquerello su carta Arches.

Postcard Exhibition - Bird Fair

Questo è l'acquerello che ho inviato alla Society of Wildlife Artist per il "Postcard Exhibition" che l'associazione terrà in occasione del Bird Fair a Rutland Water in agosto. Mostra organizzata per raccogliere fondi da destinare alle borse di studio finanziate dall'Associazione stessa. 22x16 cm, carta Arches.

Mostra annuale della Society of Wildlife Artists

Dal 19 al 23 settembre sono stato a Londra per la mostra annuale della Society of Wildlife Artists. Nessuna vendita e in generale pochi pallini rossi per una crisi che a Londra si sente ancora di più. Quest'anno però mi hanno eletto "Associate Member" un primo passo per diventare membro effettivo dopo essere riuscito ad esporre regolarmente dal 2001. Mi sembra un riconoscimento importante e prestigioso tenuto conto dell'alta qualità dei quadri esposti e degli artisti presenti.

Di questi 5 sono stati accettati e verranno esposti alla Mall Galleries di Londra dal 22 settembre al 3 ottobre.
